Chapter 10
BROOKSâ POV
I was terrified.
Terrified for my life, for my sister's and my nephew's. The alarm I felt after seeing the pictures and hearing Alex tell what happened had me rushing back home to make sure they were safe. Before I left, I asked Craig to question every cop who frequented our office and try to get information.
Who was this psychopath anyway?
He clearly was someone with influence. I had to say, the pictures helped with the profiling. For him to quietly get in and out of Alex's house when he was at home meant we were not just dealing with anyone but an experienced and professional killer.
Jordan has actually been around most of the time lately and for the first time in my life, I was grateful for it. It meant my sister and nephew had an extra layer of protection.
Julie had forgiven him. Typical, soft-hearted Julie. So, I was surprised when I got home one afternoon, two days after his return, and didn't see him hovering over the baby as usual.
"Where's Jordan?" I asked immediately as I noticed his absence. Julie was sitting on the couch filing her nails. The baby was not with her either!
"Hey Eve, youâre back early." She said, ignoring my question. I didn't care though. I walked past her to the baby's room while asking,
"Where is Jacob?" She followed behind me.
"Jordan stepped out a few hours ago. Said he won't be long, and the baby is asleep." I was in the baby's room and I took big steps to reach his crib.
I heaved a breath of relief I didn't know I was holding.
I nodded at her response. I was kind of irritated that the muttonhead wasn't around. I just hoped he wouldn't stay out long. If he was back in town, he should be making himself useful and be at home taking care of his wife and kid.
"What's up, Eve?" Julie asked, staring at me in concern.
I sighed in exhaustion.
"You should keep the baby with you at all times, Julie. That madman is still running free." I said directly, and she gave me a confused look.
I wasn't in the mood to be a lecturer, so I left the room. She tried to follow me and I stopped her.
"What did I just say?" I snapped and she gasped. âThere's a psychopath running around, killing people in the most sadistic way, taking pictures of me in my office. For all I know, he could be listening to us now, getting ready to strike. So please, stay with Jacob!" I yelled, and regretted it immediately. We were still in Jacob's room, and it was a wonder he didn't wake up.
I had taken out my frustrations on Julie and for a moment, she looked shocked, but it was only for a moment. Her concerned face came back and she looked at me in pity.
I brought both of my palms to my face and massaged it in frustration.
"Are you okay Eve? What happened?" She asked, holding my hand, and making me sit on a rocking chair in Jacob's room.
